DAY 7: OCTOBER 7th, 2007 - FRANK PEPE

LOCATION: Frank Pepe  (Wooster St. New Haven, CT)

GUEST(S): Robin Rothman

ORDER: 3 slices of bacon, 2 slices of a tomato pie

PIZZA REPORT: Greasy does it. I like grease when it's the result of eating freshly cooked bacon on a slice of Frank Pepe's pizza. Despite the damp top, the thin coal fired brick oven crust held tough. Perhaps because it was shielded by a delicious layer of fresh mozzarella cheese and sweet tomato sauce which have been perfected over the last 80 years.   You'll be hard pressed to find pizza this good anywhere.

ATMOSPHERE: We were the first patrons to have the pleasure of eating at Frank Pepe's on October 7th, 2007. We arrived 20 minutes before opening and soon a line began to form behind us. Located prominently on Wooster Street, Frank Pepe's is the oldest pizzeria in New Haven's little Italy. Despite quite a bit of wooden booth seating and quick service, expect a wait to get in. With high quality pizza at such low prices (fill up on pizza for about $10/ea), it is no wonder Pepe's receives nationwide recognition.

VERDICT: 4.5 out of 5 

MISC:
I recommend stopping by Pepe's whenever you are driving on I95 through New Haven.  Leave plenty of time for the line.  Robin Rothman and I were driving from Boston to New York and woke me up minutes before I recorded the video...THAT'S why I sound so beat up.
